My Style Journal: I Changed My Name, Well Not Really But Somewhat

“Find your purpose or you’re wasting air” Ermias “Nipsey Hussle” Asghedom

No matter how much I act up, curse, and skip church, you have to know that I am very spiritual. I believe that the universe made room for us before our exit from mother’s womb and that our purpose was already attached to our names. I say quite often that God placed my name on the lips, in the head and on the hearts of individuals before me knowing my name. So yeah, there is a lot connected our names, and our names are a part of our magic, which is why I decided to change my name (well kind of).

I am a firm believer that our existence is predestined. As we come of age and into our own, we must do the work needed to live our dreams and purpose. I also believe that our success in life is embedded in our dreams and purpose, and our dreams and purpose are attached to our names. For years, I hated my name; it sounded weird, and no one pronounced it right, so I allowed people to call me Maya because it seemed cool(and later because of my love for Maya Angelou) and no one could butcher it the way They did Maui. Too bad I couldn’t do the same thing with my last name because I was over being called Bam Bam Bigelow also. (LOL) It wasn’t until I matured that I understood the unique beauty of my name and the importance of embracing it. I mean if God had a blessing with my name on it, would I receive it or would it be undeliverable since I wasn’t using my actual name?

One of my favorite saying is, “I’m aware that I’m rare” because I am and know that. As a girl Growing up in Iron City, Georgia, I was always different from the other kids around me; my interest were always different, my attitude was different and even when I attempted to fit in, it translated differently. I hated my name and the fact that i was different growing up. However, i now know that my rare name compliments everything about me. My loving nature, my nurturing instinct, my high energy, my drive, my passion and my wrath combined make me the rare lover and fighter I am. Which is why even in a world over populated where everyone has a name twin, I am the only Maui Bigelow (Google it).

Today, as I prepare to celebrate my 42nd trip around the sun, I am fully committed to living my dreams and operating in my purpose. This commitment begins with reclaiming my name by using it instead of my beloved moniker #PHATGirlFresh, that I started using seven years ago as a blogger. The change isn’t because I’m not passionate, happy, appreciative and true (PHAT); its because I’m P.H.A.T but Maui Bigelow first and foremost. That and I have moves to make, books to write and lives to impact and while I could have done those things as PHAT Girl Fresh, my purpose is attached to Maui and its time to transition.

By now most of you have noticed, I have changed my name on all my social media platforms (well I’m awaiting Facebook’s approval) and the website is now MauiBigelow.com.This change is something i have wanted to do since 2016 when i purchased the domain and had a logo made. However, instead of being obedient and moving i allowed fear to paralyze me… until now!

So yeah, I identified with my purpose at the age of 10 years old. I learned how my dreams and purpose were connected and how to make them reality as a young adult. As a woman I learned the power attached to my name. Thank God and the universe for placing me on the frontline of so many teachable moments that have ushered me to greater. Oh and just in case you don’t believe being obedient grants you favor… After years of begging Instagram to verify my account, it happened exactly one week after I changed my name.

This is not a post about fashion. This is a friendly reminder that the way you style your life determines how successful you are and the influence you offer the world. How you style your life connects you to your purpose and living your purpose draws you closer to God. Your style can’t be mimicked or matched; it is a muscle only you can flex.

This is God’s doing! I still remember vividly th This is God’s doing! I still remember vividly the way I felt when I found out I was pregnant with my son. I remember the day I planned to abort him. I damn near remember every moment that I have shared with him over the last 23 years and every moment I had with God on his behalf. As we prepare for yet another amazing moment, I am grateful.

Grateful that God loved me enough to bless me with this joyful black boy. Grateful that he was patient as I grew from girl to woman while being his mother. Grateful that he inspired me to push past every roadblock placed in my path.

@youknowitszaydoe, I am so proud of you and I love you far beyond any words, actions, or material items, black man. I once called you sun because you shined like one but truthfully you out shine the sun, son. i pray that you receive and cherish every good and perfect thing God has for you. I pray you continue to pursue your purpose with passion. Most of all I pray that and abundance of love and light surround you and that despite life challenges you never cower in the face of adversity.
