“Stay Afraid, but do it anyway. What’s important is the action. You don’t have to wait to be confident. Just do it and eventually the confidence will follow” Carrie Fisher

Maui of PHAT Girl Fresh

For years, I have heard people say, “never say never” and while I totally understand why they say this, there have been plenty of times when never has been my response. Many times, “NEVER” is attached to again in an effort to emphasis the thought of knowing better and doing better. However, there are also times when “NEVER” is proclaimed out of fear. In keeping with our transparent relationship and since I’m not a lying woman, I must tell you that I have declared “NEVER” from a place of fear many times.

One of the spaces that fear has shown its ugly face has been fashion. understand that I am a lover of fashion, but I am not obsessed with trends; my love for fashion is displayed via my personal style. However, the truth is, there have been certain fashion trends I would have loved to style and slay that I fearfully dismissed. Now don’t get it twisted, one of my claims to fame is still, I wear what I want. Oh and, please know that my fear was not about what others would think or say, it was all about me!

Before I go any further, let me say, I love my body and I know exactly what I am working with. I have a heavy mid-section, a fupa and a flat butt. Along with knowing my body, i know how I like to see myself when i look in the mirror. Now I know some body positive influencers are going to frown on this but… I DON’T CARE, and I want you to know that you have the right to love your body and make unapologetic decisions about how you style your body.

I know many other women with my body type will feel the same in feeling comfortable in the clothes they wear. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find stunning clothing that’s suited to your individual body type, but it’s not impossible. There are plenty of online stores, like Monroe Clothing, that offer a variety of styles for everyone, at an impeccable quality. It’s just about searching!

I know you are dying to know what articles of clothing I WAS fearful of, with your nosy asses! LOL!! Well, let me tell you, one of the articles of clothing was a jumpsuit (not to be confused with a catsuit). Ugh, I wanted one so bad, but I couldn’t picture myself looking amazing; not once I factored in my flat butt and big gut. I was afraid to even try one on because I was convinced I would look horrible or cute yet pregnant or like a big baby wearing a pamper. So yeah, I hoarded those fears for years… until now!

After telling Jasmine of Jibri for years that was going to face my fear and rock one of her jumpsuits, I finally did it. I wore it during my Life Styled Honors event in April and I felt amazing. Then, in June I was styled for a shoot in the jumpsuit by my girl Nikki Free and was feeling myself… wanna see?

So yeah, dragon slayed! I overcame that, and I am on to conquering something else. The Funny thing about fear is that thing that you fear seems so major at the time and so minor once you face it.

Tell me, what are some of your fears! How have you faced them?

One of mine is short skirts! I always feel like they’re just too short in the back! But i still wear them anyway. Because thats why they make shorts to put underneath right?!

You have to know your body and what makes you comfortable.

You look great! You’ve given me the impetus to try a jumpsuit. I live in maxi dresses. I have huge thighs and fat inner knees…so I stick with very wide legged pants if I ever wear pants. As you stated above “I am a lover of fashion, but I am not obsessed with trends; my love for fashion is displayed via my personal style”. That statement is reflective of me. But I am going to throw caution to the wind and look for a jumpsuit! Thanks for this. Oh, BTW< you have GREAT LEGS!

You could definitely do a jumpsuit like this.

I have a fear of wearing a crop top. I love them, but I’m always looking to cover my weird shaped stomach. I have seen you rocking them and looking great. I’m going to find a way to conquer that fear.

This is God’s doing! I still remember vividly th This is God’s doing! I still remember vividly the way I felt when I found out I was pregnant with my son. I remember the day I planned to abort him. I damn near remember every moment that I have shared with him over the last 23 years and every moment I had with God on his behalf. As we prepare for yet another amazing moment, I am grateful.

Grateful that God loved me enough to bless me with this joyful black boy. Grateful that he was patient as I grew from girl to woman while being his mother. Grateful that he inspired me to push past every roadblock placed in my path.

@youknowitszaydoe, I am so proud of you and I love you far beyond any words, actions, or material items, black man. I once called you sun because you shined like one but truthfully you out shine the sun, son. i pray that you receive and cherish every good and perfect thing God has for you. I pray you continue to pursue your purpose with passion. Most of all I pray that and abundance of love and light surround you and that despite life challenges you never cower in the face of adversity.
