R.I.P Domineque Banks A.K.A Longhairdontcare2011

April 11, 2014

Domineque BanksLike many, I was shocked to find out about the passing of Domineque Banks, a natural hair avocate, vlogger and blogger.  Domineque was know to the word but her rightful handle, Longhairdontcare2011.  She was so liked and loved by a community of natural hair media, natural hair followers and many others.  Not only an advocate for natural hair, Domineque was a advocate for lupus awareness, a disease that she lived with and the attributed to her death.  As we mourn the loss of the precious 27 year old life, it is important that we continue to raise awareness about lupus.

A friend of Domineque’s family  released this statement in regards to her passing; “It is with a most heavy heart that I bring you the news of my dear friend’s passing. Domineque passed away on April 9th, 2014 after complications brought on by Lupus. Though she was a long-time sufferer of this disease, her condition turned for the worst in recent months with her kidneys functioning at a terribly low rate. Tragically, Domineque fell unconscious the night of April 7th but thankfully her amazing partner was there by her side to perform CPR and call 911. Domineque was placed on life support and was not able to breathe on her own. At 12:30pm, on April 9th, after having suffered a heart attack, she passed away. She was 27 years old. This is a truly difficult time for her spouse, family, and friends– it is beyond surreal and heartbreaking to write what has transpired. I have set up this fundraiser to help with both the funeral and cremation costs. Also, we are trying to fly out her sister and young nephew who don’t have the funds to purchase flights. We will make sure they see Domineque one last time.We sincerely thank you for your help, it is humbly appreciated.”  tumblr_n3uijt2ALt1qed1eao1_1280

Lupus is a chronic inflammatory disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs. Inflammation caused by lupus can affect many different body systems — including your joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, brain, heart and lungs. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose because its signs and symptoms often mimic those of other ailments. The most distinctive sign of lupus — a facial rash that resembles the wings of a butterfly unfolding across both cheeks — occurs in many but not all cases of lupus. Some people are born with a tendency toward developing lupus, which may be triggered by infections, certain drugs or even sunlight. While there’s no cure for lupus, treatments can help control symptoms.lupus-awareness-2-facebook-cover

We are just a few weeks away from the month of May which is lupus awareness month.  I would like to see us paint social media purple in honor of this and so many beautiful spirits that lost their battle to lupus.

I have lived with this disease for 31 yrs now and have been so very close to death many times myself. I know not why I have been spared. Lupus is a very cruel and nasty disease and it does not discriminate and can kill you in the blink of an eye. I’m so deeply saddened about Dominique’s passing. It’s not fair to her or her family and I have many prayers for them on there way. Maybe in some strange way Domonique’s struggle and fight to stay alive and be and do the very best she could each day will bring more Lupus
awareness to the world. RIP sunshine!!

My heart goes out to you Cheryl. My Bigmama has lupus and I had a friend that lost her battle with sickle cell. I know that it is a horrible illness. I pray that God continues to watch over you.

I was sadden by Domineque’s passing too but her mark has been made of the world. I think This will educate more people about lupus and the struggle that you have.

I use all of my energy to educate women about issues that directly affect us so you can rest assured that I will be informing others.

I was diagnosed in 2008 and don’t really know how long I “actually” had it. No, it’s not easy and I take my hat off to you Cheryl and may Dominique rest in heavenly peace as her memory is VICTORIOUS and surely God will make good use of her spirit there in heaven! I live each day not knowing exactly how I’m going to feel yet know I do start off thankful. I can go on but my heart is heavy right now….please forgive me. Lupus Awareness – we all can make a difference!

This is God’s doing! I still remember vividly th This is God’s doing! I still remember vividly the way I felt when I found out I was pregnant with my son. I remember the day I planned to abort him. I damn near remember every moment that I have shared with him over the last 23 years and every moment I had with God on his behalf. As we prepare for yet another amazing moment, I am grateful.

Grateful that God loved me enough to bless me with this joyful black boy. Grateful that he was patient as I grew from girl to woman while being his mother. Grateful that he inspired me to push past every roadblock placed in my path.

@youknowitszaydoe, I am so proud of you and I love you far beyond any words, actions, or material items, black man. I once called you sun because you shined like one but truthfully you out shine the sun, son. i pray that you receive and cherish every good and perfect thing God has for you. I pray you continue to pursue your purpose with passion. Most of all I pray that and abundance of love and light surround you and that despite life challenges you never cower in the face of adversity.
